Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

The Carpal Tunnel is a tunnel where your flexor tendons and median nerve pass through your wrist. They are bordered by our carpal bones and the transverse carpal ligament.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is when the median nerve along with the flexor tendons are compressed as they pass through the carpal tunnel.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Burning or numbness on the anterior aspect of the wrist.
  • Numbness worse at night
  • Numbness or paresthesia in the thumb, index and middle fingers (this can vary from person to person)

To diagnose this, we do:

  • Nerve Condition Studies.
  • There are also a number of tests we can do including Tinel’s Sign. A positive Tinel sign means that tapping your nerve causes a tingling sensation to radiate through that area of your body. It’s sometimes described as a pins and needles feeling. The Tinel sign shows there’s damage in the nerve.
  • Bending your wrist forward all the way for 60 seconds will usually result in numbness, tingling, or weakness (this is called the Phalen test)

Our Approach

  • Most cases that are mild can be treated non surgically with splinting and medical management such as NSAIDS e.g. ibuprofen
  • Some severe cases can be treated with surgery

What preventative measures you can take: Ergonomic aids, such as split keyboards, keyboard trays, typing pads, and wrist braces, may be used to improve wrist posture during typing. Take frequent breaks when typing and always stop if you feel tingling or pain.

Although a common source of wrist pain, Carpal Tunnel t is not the only condition that produces this pain, so please consult your physiotherapist and or doctor to discuss the best management for you or book in with us below.
